Our group chose to target a specific global issue, hunger. Doctors without Borders invest much effort healing those suffering from malnutrition. Our focus with “regeneration” was not just on healing but prevention. The physical planting of seeds which generates the growth of young plants is symbolic of new life, health, and even a solution to the problem of hunger. At the same time the planters are providing the owner with the nutritional source of edible herbs.
The logo “regeneration” was written in four different languages representing some of the geographic regions in which Doctors Without Borders is working. This highlighted the fact that hunger is a global issue. We found recipes from Mexico, Thailand and China that incorporated the herbs we were selling, in this way expanding the buyerʼs taste of the world.
The planters were designed to be small in size so that they would easily fit in a window sill or over a kitchen sink with the hopes that they would be placed in a central, visible location. The pots themselves are abstracted seed forms that fit together creating a beautiful pattern. This connection represents the idea that the worldwide problem of hunger can only be solved as individuals come together for the cause. Each contribution or action, seemingly insignificant on its own, has a cumulative effect. The planters are a thank you to the contributer and a reminder to the owner/user that hunger exists and we should continue to work towards a solution.
